A History of Wootton Bridge - Hilary Gosden


This is a series of booklets about various aspects of Wootton Bridge, a village situated between Newport and Ryde, Isle of Wight. Each is compiled using primary sources held at the Isle of Wight County Record Office, as well as various secondary sources and some memories of local people.

Part Three - The Old School
The old village school opened in 1866 and the history of the building, teachers and pupils is traced until the end of the second World War. There is a page taking the history up to closure of the old building and the opening of the new school in 1969.

Part Four - Fernhill
Fernhill was a large House situated in the village and the booklet covers the period from the building of the property, c1794, to its final demise in 1938. As well as the activities of the families owning the House, reference is made to the servants employed there and their work.

Part Five - Inns and Alehouses
This booklet traces the history of the five licenced premises in the village; only three remain. It also gives information about the families and events connected to them.

Part Six - High Days & Holidays
Chapters include the Carnival & Regatta; Woodside & the Holiday Camps; Wootton Farm & the 1969 Pop festival; Snippets not included elsewhere; etc.

Each booklet is A5 size, paperback, with 36 pages. A list of sources is given as well as a surname index. They are illustrated with black and white prints, photographs, map(s), reproduced original documents and some pen and ink drawings.

Books 1 and 2 are now out of print and sold out completely.

Cost : Parts 3, 4 & 5 are £3.50 each while Part 6 is £4.50.
