This is a very valuable Genealogy site for United Kingdom and

This is a very useful website for Family Historians -
especially beginners. It is very userfriendly, easy to navigate
and full of useful information.
Reference site for beginners to family History
This is a new reference type website which is aimed principally at
guiding newcomers to genealogy on WHERE to seek information on
their English and Welsh ancestors in a systematic structured way.
This is a well constructed site and very straight-forward to
use. Within this large web site (it runs to over 250 pages) there is a
county-by-county guide to family history societies.

SURNAME MAPPING
A new website which shows the distribution of surnames in
1881 and 1998 throughout the UK. The study, carried out by a
team led by two professors from University College London, shows
that most of the migration to London after 1881 came from
Scotland, Norfolk, the North West, and South East.

The Commonwealth War Graves
Commission have now put their database of 1.7 million entries on
to the internet and it is freely searchable. Follow the link to

MAPS
A very useful website to find maps of any place in modern
England is multimap.com You can enter a postcode, the name
of a house, hotel or building or a street name and a map will
come up on your screen which you can download. You can either
get a map or an aerial photograph.

Old Photograph around the UK
This is an on going site to which old photographs are being
added constantly. It covers all the counties of England,
Ireland, Scotland, Wales & the Channel Islands although at the
moment there are not photographs in all these places.

Ellis Island Records
All immigrants into the USA had to pass through Ellis Island
first where there details we taken and are still kept on record.
This is a very good way of finding if and when any of your
ancestors went to America.

There is a complete passenger list for those that sailed with the

Access to Archives
This site is part of the growing national archives network in the
UK established by the Public Record Office. The catalogues are
the key to the archives they describe, but many are not available
elsewhere on the Internet. There is a straight forward word, phrase or
date search facility on this very valuable site.

Workhouses, Poorlaws, etc/
This could be a very useful web site for anyone who knows
that an ancestor was born in or went to a workhouse at any time.
It lists workhouses all over the UK, including the House of
Industry on the Isle of Wight. There is a varying amount of
information about different workhouses but the House of Industry
is quite well convered.

This is a searchable digital library of Local & Trade
