FICHE
ISLE OF WIGHT EDWARDIAN BAPTISM INDEX
1st January 1901 to 31st December 1910
This has been compiled with the help of Richard Smout, the IW
County Archivist and Barry's colleague, Joyce Morrison. The index
follows on from the Cardex found in the IW County Record Office,
which lists every known baptism up to 31st December 1900.
It comprises 12,500 baptisms from all the Anglican Registers
(except St.Paul's Shanklin), all the Roman Catholic Registers
(except for Newport) and a large number of Non-Conformist
Registers from various denominations. The index is published in a
set of 4 fiches.
The headings under which the information is entered are:-
Full name, Parents names, Church, Date of Baptism, sometimes Date
of Birth, sometimes Occupation of Father.
Remember that not all those born on the Island were baptised here
or at all and that not all those baptised on the Island were born
here, many being baptised as adults. Cowes St. Mary Register is
full of ship building families from elsewhere, whilst the
Garrison towns of Newport, Sandown and Freshwater had regular
changes of military families. Add to this the changes in
Coastguards, Police, Prison Services and other uniformed staff
and it can be seen that over the 10 year span covered by the
Baptism Index reflects mini census, not only of Island families
but also of new families who came voluntarily or otherwise, to
work and maybe settle on the Island.
Whilst every care has been taken to ensure the information in the
Index is correct, you are advised (as always) to check the
original sources. To help in this, photocopies of the Registers
are on display at the IW record Office. The only information not
included, because of lack of space in the index are the
addresses, which vary from very sparse to quite detailed, but you
can see these in the display copies.
