BOOKS ADDED TO THE IWFHS LIBRARY

Images of England - Ryde Postcards by Lynette Archer & John Woodford. Published by Tempus, 2003. ISBN 0-7524-2954-X. Price £12.99 and available from any bookshop.
The birth of the postcard came at a time when Ryde was a young and bustling town. This book, compiled by two members of the Isle of Wight Picture Postcard Club, gives what is virtually a pictorial history of Ryde. Included in its 128 pages are early pictures of Ryde with excursions to Havenstreet, Binstead and Nettlestone. Featured are hotels and shops, events and people. As an overner it is a salutary lesson to see oneself pictured and to realise that that picture is now part of the Island's history. A well constructed and informative book.

Tracing your Twentieth Century Family History by Stuart A. Raymond. Published by FFHS, 2003. ISBN 1-86006-176-1. Price £5.95 and available from FFHS (Publications) Ltd, Units 15-16 Chesham Industrial Centre, Oram St, Bury, Lancs BL9 6EN.
On the premise that, in family history, one works from the known back into the unknown, the 20th century is our starting point. However, many records containing personal information are not yet open to the general public. This little handbook gives advice on what to look for and where. It also provides useful lists for further reading and details of current relevant websites.

Family Feuds, an Introduction to Chancery Proceedings by Susan T. Moore. Published by FFHS, 2003. ISBN 1-86006-163-X. Price £5.95 and available from FFHS, address as above.
The Court of Chancery, along with a few other courts, covered civil actions where one person had some complaint against another. These cases can provide useful genealogical detail and information, but how can we find if our ancestors were involved? Most of us, in researching our families, may feel intimidated by the task of finding out. In this book, a professional historical researcher, with a great deal of experience in the records of Chancery, outlines what records are available and how to use the finding aids available. A rational and clearly presented booklet, with examples of documents shown throughout, this may encourage some to

An account of the place of the midwife in history and, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. There is particular reference to Yorkshire and includes an index of Yorkshire midwives nominations.

Researching Brewery and Publican Ancestors by Simon Fowler. Published by FFHS, 2003. ISBN 1-86006-174-5. Price £3.95 and available from FFHS, address as above.
A brief account of brewing and the licenced trade with pointers to possible records and sources.

Ancestral Trails by Mark D. Herber. Published by Sutton Publishing Limited in association with the Society of Genealogists, 1997. ISBN 0-7509-1418-1. Price £30 (£20 in paperback form) and available from family history book specialists.
A comprehensive 674 page book covering sources for English family history research, with one chapter on the rest of the British Isles and another on emigration / immigration and investigating abroad. Location and use of the sources are given and, for many sources, examples are given to illustrate their use. There is also a substantial bibliography. Inevitably, with a book 6 years old, one or two topics are now slightly out of date but nevertheless this is a very useful reference. Village Records by John West. 3rd edition, published by Phillimore & Co Ltd, 1997. ISBN 1-86077-040-1. Price £30 and available from any bookshop.
A standard textbook, originally published 40 years ago but updated, giving information on local records for rural research. Although intended originally for the local historian this book is of relevance to the family historian. Working from earliest sources such as Saxon charters, place-names and the Domesday Book, a path is traced through manorial records, tax records, courts and probate, parish records, enclosures and tithe maps until the commercial directories of the 19th century are reached. This book is of greatest use when the parish registers have failed.

The Island of our Ancestors by Bill Shepard & Brian Greening. Published by Bill Shepard & Brian Greening, 2003. Price £11 and available from The County Press Bookshop.
A book of 112 pages in A4 format from two well-known writers on Island history. The starting premise is that life has changed almost out of recognition over the last century and, inevitably, the Island has changed in consequence. The book then covers aspects such as transport, industry, sanitation and many others. Many of the items are illustrated with old photographs or maps. This is a book to dip into time and again.

Medical Officers in the British Army, Vol 1, 1660 to 1896 by A Peterkin & William Johnston, and Vol 2, 1898 to 1960 by Lt Gen Sir Robert Drew. Published by The Wellcome Historical Medical Library, 1968. Out of print.
A chronological listing, with an index at the end of each volume, of all known army medical officers with brief details of qualifications and service. An important starting point for anyone with military/medical ancestors.

Discovering English County Regiments by Ian F.W. Beckett. Published by Shire Publications Ltd., 2003. ISBN 0-7478-0506-7. Price £9.99 and available from any bookshop.
An account of the regiments associated with each county from the late 19th century to the late 20th century, giving the numbered foot regiments from which they were formed and detailing the more recent amalgamations. Information includes, among other things, regimental history, battle honours, location of regimental museums, badge (not illustrated) and nicknames. As indicated by the title, details are not given of any other than the county regiments and the treatment is from the point of view of the regular army with no account of any county territorial units. Nevertheless a useful accessory for those investigating army ancestors.

The Place-Names of the Isle of Wight by A.D. Mills. Published by Paul Watkins, 1996. ISBN 1-900289-00-8. Price £7.95 and available from Ottakers or the Shop of Carisbrooke Castle Museum. Roslin, Sibdown, Stagwell, where on the Island are they?
The classic book on Island place-names is that written by K”keritz in 1940, long out of print and available at considerable cost from antiquarian booksellers. The present book, while not having as many names, does cover all the names mentioned in the 1:50000 Ordnance Survey map plus many others. The origins of each name are given in the light of modern-day thinking on place-names. Its main use to the Isle of Wight family historian is to identify place names that may appear in wills or other family documents. There is also interest in the many place-names that incorporate personal names.

Tracing your Scottish Ancestry, 3rd Edition by Kathleen B. Cory updated by Leslie Hodgson. Published by Polygon, 2004. ISBN 0-9544075-7-1. Price £9.99 and available from any bookshop.
A standard `How to' book for those with Scottish ancestors updated for the computer age. Topics covered include using the General Register Office of Scotland and also the National Archives of Scotland. The Clan system and Scottish heraldry are reviewed. A very long list of useful addresses given as, also, is a list of parishes with their counties and commissariots. There is a very useful section on frequently asked questions.

Tracing your Irish Ancestors, 2nd Edition by John Grenham. Published by Gill & Macmillan, 1999. ISBN 0-7171-2796-6. Price £12.95 and available from any bookshop.
Tracing Irish ancestors has a reputation for being difficult due to the loss of so many important records. This book seeks to guide the family researcher through what is available both in Northen Ireland and in the Republic. Major sources considered are surviving elements of the census records, civil registration, and church and land records. County source lists are given as also are location of Roman Catholic parish records. Of the secondary sources reviewed, significantly for Ireland, there is a sizeable section on emigration. One of the shortcomings of what is considered the standard reference book for Irish family research is the lack of an index.

Dating Nineteenth Century Photographs by Robert Pols. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2005. ISBN 1-86006-188-5. Price £5.95.
This book, together with a companion volume Dating Twentieth Century Photographs, replaces Dating Old Photographs. The division into two volumes allows more detail to be included, e.g. dating charts for styles of mount, photographic processes and use of lighting. With many examples this is a useful reference for dating those family portraits as well as giving an interesting background to the development of professional photography.

Tracing your Nineteenth Century Family History by Stuart A. Raymond. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2005. ISBN 1-86006-186-9. Price £7.95.
The second in the series Family History Century by Century (the 20th Century volume is already in the Library). This pocket dictionary sized book covers potential sources for 19th century family history from the obvious, such as Civil Registration, Parish Registers and Censuses, to the less obvious such as Tithe Maps, Militia, Court and Educational records. At the end of each chapter is a section giving useful web sites and titles for further reading.

British History and Heritage on the Web - A Directory by Stuart A. Raymond. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2004. ISBN 1-86006-184-2. Price £6.50.

Unusually, not a reference work to use to trace your ancestors, more one to find information on the times through which they lived. There are chapters on institutions and societies (not family history) and other general topics followed by chapters on each historical period from prehistory to the 20th century. A chapter on local history and archaeology shows a site for the Island freespace.virgin.net/roger.hewitt/iwias/ although incorrectly attributed to the Isle of Wight Archaeology Society rather than the Island's Industrial Archaeology Society.

Irish Family History on the Web - A Directory, 2nd Edition by Stuart A. Raymond. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2004. ISBN 0-86006-183-4. Price £5.95.
An updated list of web sites for Irish Family History. Web addresses are given for Record Offices and Family History Societies as well as many local sources throughout Ireland.

Basic Facts about Methodist Records for Family Historians ISBN 1-86006-185-0 and Basic Facts about The Wesleyan Methodist Historic Roll ISBN 1-86006-187-7 both by Richard Ratcliffe and Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2005. .
Two primers on Methodism and its records: the first covers Methodism, its history and records, the second deals with how to access the records of the 'Twentieth Century Fund' raised between 1899 and 1909 and to which one million people each donated a guinea.

Reviewed here are new books that have been published by the FFHS. These are all available from Federation of Family History Societies (Publications) Ltd, Units 15-16, Chesham Industrial Centre, Oram Street, Bury, Lancs, BL9 6EN

Dating Twentieth Century Photographs by Robert Pols. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2005. ISBN 1-86006-191-5. Price £6.50.
This is a companion volume to Dating Nineteenth Century Photographs which was reviewed in the August 2005 journal. The book concentrates on the first half of the century and moves from the time of studio portraits through the growth of affordable 'snapshot' cameras up to the development of popular single lens reflex cameras.

Genealogical Jargon for Family Historians by Stuart A. Raymond. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2005. ISBN 1-86006-192-3. Price £3.95.
'What is the difference between o.s.p. and o.t.p.?' 'Is copyhold the same as copyright?' Every hobby and interest has its individual jargon and family history is no exception. This book is a small dictionary of words and terms that may be unfamiliar to the novice. Although slim (47 pages), it is a useful reference book, but the user need to be aware that acronyms/initials separated by full stops e.g. 'T.N.A.' and 'P.C.C.' appear before other entries beginning with the same letter (as in the telephone directory arrangement).

All by Stuart A. Raymond. Published by FFHS Publications Ltd, 2005. Price £6.95 each. Updated volumes in a rapidly changing situation. The entry for our Society's BMD index (under Hampshire) reads 'Index of civil registers held by district registrars, 1837-2000, in progress'.

Victoria County History for Hampshire. Published by Boydell & Brewer. Volume 1 ISBN 0-7129-0591-X Volume 2 ISBN 0-7129-0592-8 Volume 4 ISBN 0-7129-0594-4 Volume 5 ISBN 0-7129-0595-2 Index ISBN 0-7129-0596-0
A donation from Glenn LANE, has enabled most of the set of the Victoria County History (VCH) for Hampshire to be purchased; these volumes are now with the Society.
The VCH, for any county, is an essential reference work. The project was begun in 1899; the aim was to produce, for each English county, authoritative accounts of general subjects such as prehistory, ecclesiastical history and economic history, as well as local topographical details, usually arranged in the hundreds of the County. Some counties, including Hampshire, completed the task before World War I when the project foundered. It was restarted later and some county histories are still in progress with new volumes being published from time to time. .

The Hampshire County History, which includes the Isle of Wight, comprises 5 volumes and an index volume. The first two volumes cover county-wide histories, so that Volume 1 has accounts of the natural history and prehistory of the county and includes Romano-British remains, Anglo Saxon remains, concluding at Domesday and the Winchester survey. The second volume has an ecclesiastical history of the county and accounts of religious houses which include Quarr Abbey and Carisbrooke Priory. It also has a history of schools, including the old Newport Grammar School, and a history of forestry in the county, especially the New Forest. The volume concludes with an account of the Hundred of Alton.

The third volume, covering many of the eastern and southern Hundreds of mainland Hampshire, is unfortunately out of print; the fourth volume details the Hundreds and their component parishes at the west and north of the county, including the New Forest. The fifth volume is of most interest to those researching Island families as it includes the two historic Hundreds of the Island, East and West Medine; in this volume the historic importance of Bowcombe is explained and the old manors of Edington and Uggaton identified. The parish entries include topographical description, notable buildings and inhabitants, historical anecdotes, communications, ecclesiastical, manors and owners, church and advowson, schools, charities etc; the references to documents are very useful. The volume concludes with more recent general histories of Hampshire on e.g. Political History, Social and Economic History, Industries and Maritime History, Agriculture and Sport. Finally, as a separate volume, there is a combined index for the County.

Other books, which are new to the library, include:

Coastguards of the Isle of Wight by Tony Gale. Published by Coach House Publications Ltd, 2005. ISBN 1-899-392-416. Donated by Betty Dhillon
A brief general history of the 19th century formation of the Coastguards, how they were organised and developed; with a comprehensive listing, with many photographs, of each of the many Coastguard Stations that have existed around the Island, with some notes of the people involved.
Available from the County Press Shop and Ottakars.

At War with the Smugglers by Rear-Admiral D Arnold-Forster. Published by Ward, Lock in 1936. Donated by Tony Mundell
A fitting companion to the Coastguard History, this book charts the career of William ARNOLD, Collector of Customs at Cowes between 1777 and 1801. It is told largely through letters from Arnold to his brother-in-law in America, Joseph DELAFIELD. A very readable book, especially for those with Cowes ancestors; it has some illustrations but, regrettably, no index.

A Journey in Ancestry by Rae P Collins. Published by Alan Sutton, 1984. ISBN 0-86299-159-5. Donated by Roy Middlebrook.
This is a story about tracing the history of an East Anglian family, the CLARKEs; there is a history of the family from 1635with a chapter per generation. The book is illustrated with family photographs, facsimiles of documents and very attractive sketches by Alan Bantock. A good exercise in social history and a fine example of how to present a family history.

The National Archives, a Practical Guide for Family Historians by Stella Colwell. Published by The National Archives, 2006. ISBN 1-903365-85-6. Price £9.99.
This is the latest in a long line of books from the PRO and TNA, explaining how to use their records for family history research. After an introduction to TNA and a brief review of records held elsewhere, the records of the National Archives are considered from A to Z (well, strictly, from Apprentices to Wills). At the end there is general advice, a list for further reading and a list of useful addresses. In a changing world, what differentiates this book from its predecessors is the attention to online information.

Coastguards of the Isle of Wight, 1809 - Present Day by Tony Gale. Published by Coach House Publications, 2005. ISBN 1-899-392-416. Donated by Betty Dhillon.
For a taster see the report elsewhere on this page. The book is well illustrated and contains much information. As well as information on the history of the service and detail on the Coastguard stations there are biographical notes on the senior officers on the Island.

Men of Chale by Derek Sprake. Published by Coco Design Co, 2006. ISBN 13: 978-0-9552916-0-9. Price £11.95.
The first step in family history is to explore what is available within the family. Imagine inheriting the contents of a house where nothing seems to have been thrown away for over a century. When Edward ROBERTS died in 2004, Derek Sprake found himself the possessor of a wealth of documents, papers, letters, photographs and general artefacts that gives a graphic picture of life in Chale through the end of the Victorian era and a century dominated by two world wars. A fascinating book.

Regimental Badges worn in the British Army 100 years ago by Edward Almack. Published by Blades East & Blades, 1900. Donated by Roy Middlebrook.
Elementary arithmetic shows that the book covers the designs of regimental badges of the period of the Napoleonic War. The basis is a notebook belonging to a silver smith of the time, which contained sketches of the badges. In addition, the author has identified the regiments and has added notes on their history.
