SALTER
I am looking for information on William SALTER born 1808 +- a year.
The first record I have is his marriage to Marie Ann SIMON, Sept. 8, 1833 at
St. Helier, Jersey C.I. The marriage showed William as from Gatcombe.
Marie died Feb 7, 1845 in St. Helier.
My second record for William SALTER is his marriage to Rachel SORSOLEIL which stated that he
was a widower from the I.O.W. Son of Isaac. Marriage was July 12, 1845 in Jersey C.I.
William and Rachel had six children in Jersey then emigrated to the Gaspe area
of Canada.
Thank you for any help

MAJOR
MAJOR family of Newport IOW research. If anybody has information
about Capt. James Major born Newport 1734 or his family I should
be very interested to communicate. I am especially trying to
discover what happened to him after 1795.
He is not the James Major who died at Brading in 1806 but is
probably related to the James Major of the Atherfield Customs
boat in 1817 and at Shorwell. Any scraps appreciated.

CHEVERTON FARM
Does anyone know whether Cheverton Farm near Shorwell used to be
known as Cheverton Manor? Also I am told that there was once a
carved wooden tree there of the Cheverton family. Does anyone know
whether this still exists and, if so, where it is?

Harriet ROOTE
My Grandmother, Harriet Roote, died on the Isle of Wight in
1973. I was able to get the newspaper clipping from the Isle of
Wight press. which gave an account of how she died by falling
down stairs. She was 81. Her husband, Arthur Roote died in the
same year. They had both been actors. What I wanted to find out
was if anyone would have known them or known of them. They
lived in Blows Cottage, Lane End Road, Bembridge. Any photographs
of the house would be great. I live in New Zealand. Many thanks.

Frederick KING
I am looking for any information on my gt gt grandfather,
Frederick King, b.1818? Brixton, Brighstone to confirm that he
was born on the Island and if his father was William King, a
yeoman.
According to the Ancestry site for the 1841 census
he was born in Brixton, Hampshire about 1818 and married in 1846
to a girl from his village, Emma James. I have found the
marriage on the IOW BMD site and most of the children but
Frederick seems to have dissappeared after the 1871 census as he
is not recorded as dying on the Island. The 1871 census says
that he was an Innkeeper of the 'Globe Inn' on Coppins Bridge,
Newport. If anyone knows of these people I would appreciate some
help.

Frederick WRIGHT
I would like to be put in touch with the descendants of
Frederick Wright. I have a newspaper cutting from IOW County
Press C1950 about Frederick Wright a Ryde window cleaner. The
cutting was found in my late grandmothers effects. It must of
been important to her as she had kept it for 30 years. It has
only recently been passed on to me and I would like to find out
if we are related.
My 2x GGrandfather was James Wright living in Wootton Bridge
1871. So we have a name in common, also I can see a family
resmblance between Frederick and my grandmother.
Frederick Wright had a large family 2 sons and 9 daughters, he
was living with one of his daughters a Mrs DG MITCHISION at
WOOTTON RISE at the time the article was published.

FAULKNER
I am tracing the descendents of the children of Elizabeth Ann
SNELLING and William FAULKNER of Ryde, Isle of Wight. They ran
the Battery Hotel at Seaview for many years. There were 11
children (12 including Eliz's from a previous relationship) - of
the 10 Faulkner daughters , eight of them married into the
following families: FINCH, MOORE, DAISH, TUFFNELL, RUSSELL, NASH,
WHEELER AND CHARLO. My line comes through the Wheeler
connection; I know that the Charlo one dies out with their
daughter. One daughter, Ethel Maud Faulkner, does not appear to
have married. Can anyone help to link up the other daughters and
their families? Many thanks.

Frederick WEEKS
Frederick WEEKS was born 1889 at Bembridge Station, where his
father William Weeks was the first Station Master. Frederick was
my great uncle and I would like to know if anyone has any further
in formation on this branch of my family. The only other
information is from tales my mother told in the past that Uncle
Fred was 'not very strong' when he returned fron the war and had
to have an outdoor job, and was to work for a time as the Toll
Gate Keeper on the Embankment Road near Bembridge Station. I have
not been able to verify this in any way.
He worked for the railway at Sandown and Shanklin Stations from
1906 . He was working at Ventnor Station as a Goods Foreman in
1913 and bacame a signalman in 1916.
He married Alice Bennet around 1914 and a daughter Mary Gabrielle
was born 1917.This is where my trail ends..... except that a
notion that the family may have emigrated to America at some
later stage?? If anyones has any further information on this
branch of my family or their decendants I wopuld be very pleased
to hear from them. Thank you.

JOLLIFFE
I am wondering if any members of this well known family have
any photographs of my great grandmother who was Jessie Louisa
JOLLIFFE, born on the Isle of Wight. Her father and mother were
Jacob John JOLLIFE, shipwright and Jane, nee BABBIDGE. Jacob's
line goes back to John and Sarah who married in 1763, born on the
Isle of Wight. I know that we all dream of seeing very old
photograph of our ancestors but I remain in hope.

Sabina Albertha ELDRIDGE
I am trying to trace the burial place of my Grandmother Sabina
Albertha Eldridge nee Scott born 30/11/1896. She died in a
railway accident on the 4/12/39 at Waterloo Railway Station. At
the time she was relocating back to the Island following the
outbreak of war. The records of the inquest cannot be traced and
I have drawn a blank with cemeteries around Hounslow where her
husband was stationed at the Barracks. I believe she was Roman
Catholic and may have been brought back to the Island for Burial.
A check of Quigley's and the National Burial index has also
proved also negative.
Any information or advice will be gratefully received.

WILLIAM HENRY JONES and KATHERINE FEW
Two of my grandmother's siblings disappeared from the collective
family memory, especially now that those who knew them have all
died. I would be delighted if anybody knows anything about the
following relatives.
WILLIAM HENRY JONES born Ryde 1888 was a POW in WW1, married
ANN, had a son WILLIAM after 1920 as my father called him a
'little cousin' . We think they lived in London. There is no
record of a marriage on the IOW.
KATHERINE FEW She was adopted by KATHLEEN (nee SIVELL) and NORMAN
BRUCE FEW who married in 1944. My father said he was a Prison
Warder at Parkhurst. Kathleen and Norman died in 1985 and 1993
respectively. Katherine is hopefully still be alive, but whether she married,
had children or still lives on the IOW I do not know.
I would love to hear from anyone who may have news of her.

HOLTON
I am looking for the father of Emma Louise HOLTON 1869 - 1969.
I have a copy of her marriage certificate to Cornelius Samuel
BARTLETT (1887), which states that her father was James William
HOLTON, a soldier. After their marriage, her mother Eliza HOLTON,
nee TRIBBECK lived with them. Eliza's death certificate (1908) states
that her husband was Benjamin HOLTON, a marine -
not James
William HOLTON, a soldier.
I think that I have found the reference for the marriage of Eliza and
Benjamin HOLTON in portsea 1859. but not as yet been able to
follow it up with paper evidence.
Who was James William? Were James and Benjamin brothers?
Can anyone help with either the HOLTON tree or possibly the
TRIBBECK tree (both families appear to be from Portsmouth).
