      Fan's Autograph Album

This Album, which is more of a commonplace book than a true autograph album, was gifted to the Society in 2014 by Eileen Clark, a Member of the The Australian Sociological Association.
We haven't been able to establish who Fan was, although we can see that it was a Christmas gift in 1911 from Ciss Kent. We believe Ciss Kent to have been Cecilia Kent.
Many of the people who wrote in Fan's Album were from the Shanklin area, including several mentions of a house, named 'Elmdon' which leads me to think that Fan was in domestic service, and the entries were made by other domestic servants, or perhaps school friends.

In 1911, Elmdon, in Highfield Road, Shanklin, was occupied by Walter and Eliza Fletcher, with 3 servants, Ellen Jane Sheath, aged 30, Cook; Lily Stevens, aged 26, Parlourmaid; and Dorothy Rivers Jacobs, aged 26, Housemaid. Walter Fletcher was a Mining Engineer. Ellen Jane Sheath may be the 'Nell' who signed the entry on Page 18 of the Album.

Elmdon is currently (2014) used as a Nursing and Care Home.

The striking image of dancers, on the left, is signed with initials which may be NJ or VJ.

If anyone can shed any further light on who Fan was, or give more details of any of the other named people, please do contact us.
