    Anonymous holiday album #1

This photograph album is a mystery in several ways - we don't know who donated it to the Society, and we have no idea who it belonged to, nor who the photographer was, nor the names of any of the subjects (apart from the dogs !)

These photographs are those in the album which feature the Isle of Wight; the album also contains photographs from the Channel Isles and Cornwall which have not been scanned and are not included here.

The subject matter is the usual mix of family and group photos, with some landscapes and seascapes, and usually only captioned with the place, month and year. None of the people have been identified.

The holidays featured are :

August 1933 - Sark and Guernsey
August 1934 - Guernsey
August 1935 - Ventnor
August 1936 - Ventnor and Cowes
August 1937 - s.s. London to Farne Islands
August 1937 - Penzance

Oshawa, pictured here, was a Guest House, possibly run by Miss Annie Bass. Her death was announced in the Isle of Wight County Press of 20 March 1937 :

Miss Bass died at the age of 67 on 13 March 1937, and her death was registered in Orsett, Essex.

Alpine Road consists of a number of Victorian semi-detached 4 storey villas. Oshawa was still being used as a Guest House (later styled 'Private Hotel') up to at least 1977. It is believed that it now forms part of the Ward House Nursing Home.
