The above sent by Angela McMurtry in Australia

My great grandfather came across to Portsmouth in the 1860s but it may be useful to someone as the name varied from census to census. His name was Mark Henry JOHNSTONE born 28th August 1831 in Shorwell but in the 1871 census listed as JOHNSON, and in 1881, JOHNSTON. The family name was originally JOHNSON in the eighteenth century, but by 1841 all three versions were in use simultaneously by various members of the family; Mark Henry seemed to have stuck with JOHNSTONE as this was the name on his marriage certificate.

1871
Mark H JOHNSON, head, married, 38, carpenter, unemployed county of origin Isle of Wight, Shorwell
Anne JOHNSON, wife, married, 32, county of origin Devon, Devonport
Edith E JOHNSON daughter, age 1, born Hants, Southsea
Joseph G JOHNSON, son, age 4 months, born Hants, Southsea
Address 3 Hill Lane Southsea

1881

Mark Henry JOHNSTON, head, married. 46, carpenter, Isle of Wight, Shorewell
Ann JOHNSTON, married, 41, born Devon, Plymouth
Edwin C H son, 13, scholar, born Hants, Eastney as were all the rest of the children
Edith E A, daughter, 11, scholar
Walter E, son, 8, scholar
Kate E, daughter, 6, scholar
Amelia B, daughter, 4,
Laura M N, daughter, 3
Florence F M, daughter, 11 months
Address 2 Hill Lane, Eastney
As you can see, maths wasn't Mark Henry's strong point!
