covered in due course. Many thanks to all the Volunteers who have contributed to the success of this, our flagship offering on the website !

Our Chairman gives these simple statistics: there were 3,304 deaths in 2009-2010 registered in the closed registers (ie: 4.53 per day), with an average age at death of over 80
(there’s hope for us all!). There were no less than 37 centenarians (alas only 3 of these were male) – with two people living to 106 years old!
Only 3 babies died before their first birthday (approximately one in one thousand).

BMD System changes |
We are continuing to enhance the information held on the Marriage records. The decade 1991-2000 has now been completed and work has commenced on 2001-2010 Marriages. Many of the recent Registers are still at the Churches as they are not returned to the
Registar until they are full, so this makes our task a little more difficult. We also plan to complete Births and Death to 2010 in due course.

Obituary - Christine Dowland |
“Christine Dowland, who was deputy county archivist at this office for just over ten years from 1995-2005, died at the end of June, after a short illness.
Christine lived in Havant and commuted by the Southsea-Ryde hovercraft to the Island daily. Whatever the weather she would arrive unfailingly on time: only the suspension of all cross-Solent services by Wight Link and Hovertravel would defeat her. She was able to make appreciable inroads into our backlog of cataloguing, giving priority to those collections most likely to be of use to family historians. As well as producing catalogues of high quality, she helped to make the collections more accessible by pioneering the Record Office website. She ensured that the site was easy to navigate, well-illustrated, and full of relevant information. The work that she undertook was greatly appreciated. She became the Record Office’s expert on the impact of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of information Act. This involved giving advice to many Isle of Wight Council departments on Records Management, helping to ensure the permanent preservation of the next generation of archives.
Christine had previously worked in Gwent, and after leaving the Island went on to act as the Records Manager for the University of Portsmouth.
She will be greatly missed.” - Richard Smout, Isle of Wight Heritage Service Manager, Isle of Wight County Record Office
