The Burial Registers for the Churches of the Isle of Wight are, for the most part, held by the County Record Office
(see www.iwight.com/library/record_office/default.asp )
Many of these Registers for the period 1901 to 2000 have been transcribed by Dave Gladdis, one of our members, and he has generously allowed us to present these as a searchable database. The records are searchable by Surname within a date range, but not by individual church. Note that an entry in a Church Burial Register does not always mean that the person was buried in the Churchyard. Conversely, a burial in a particular churchyard or burial ground may not be recorded in the expected Burial Register. As with all such records there may be errors in transcription so it is best to check with the original registers if possible. We would be pleased to receive any corrections, monumental inscriptions, or photographs to add to the database - please contact :- the Webmaster - Geoff Allan We would also like to acknowledge the technical assistance given by Gwynn White, another member, in creating the database, the search functions, and the resultant display screens. The Indexes cover the following churches and periods:
Notes March 2010 : Brighstone : St Mary's : entries for 1988-2009 have been made using transcriptions of the visible headstones in the Churchyard extension, and many photographs are being added for this location March 2010 : Sandown : Christ Church : entries for 1847-1900 have been made using transcriptions of the visible headstones in the Churchyard, and many plot locations, dates of death and relationships have been added from Monumental Inscriptions for the majority of the entries. (Thanks to Tina Lambert for retyping original transcriptions) July 2010 : Brading : St Mary's Church : entries for 1567-1900 have been made using transcriptions of the visible headstones in the Churchyard, and many plot locations, dates of death and relationships have been added from Monumental Inscriptions for the majority of the entries. Note that there seems to be 2 varieties of section / plot numbering for these. Work in process : adding photographs of many of the headstones in the churchyard. (Thanks to Tina Lambert for retyping original transcriptions) July 2010 : Wootton churches : entries for 1767-1900 have been made using transcriptions from the Burial Registers as published by the Parish Church Archive (with acknowledgements) |
