BUTT - Sidney Ernest [Retired Civil Servant] & WILLIAMS - Dorothy Martha Sidney left school at 13 to become a greengrocer's assistant. At the outbreak of war, just after his 15th birthday, he lied about his age and joined the 8th Hampshire Regiment as part of a Pals Brigade the Isle of Wight Rifles. He is listed on the Nominal Roll of the 8th Hampshire's on 5th July 1915 as Rifleman 320467 S.E. Butt 'A' Company IOW Rifles. He served all his service with the 8th Hampshire's and disembarked at Gallipoli as part of the reinforcement Brigade on 10th August 1915. In 1917 his number was changed to 33046 ? and from the records he was in combat before and after that year. He fought in the Middle East, serving in Turkey, Palestine and Egypt, where he spent his 18th birthday. He was in the Dardenalles, Cairo and in Gaza On 24th July 1919 he was 'disembodied' rather than demobilised because he was a Territorial and re-enlisted in The Royal Engineers Signals Corps in 1920 and the following year was posted to Larkhill Military Telephone Exchange in Wilts as a signalman-operator. After marriage the couple lived in an army hut at Larkhill and the first three children were born there. In 1923 Sidney became a civilian operator at Larkhill and was appointed supervisor of the Exchange in 1927. He moved to Bulford in that capacity in 1927. He received the British Empire Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honours on 24th September 1963, and the Imperial Service Medal possibly in 1964 the year he retired. Dorothy was the only surviving daughter of Alfred WILLIAMS and Martha PAYNE / PAINE. Born in Valetta, Malta where her father was in the coastguard. Her three younger brothers were all born in Cork, Ireland so it is obvious that the family were based there for a period between 1905-09. Dorothy saw the Titanic sail out of Southampton in 1912 as she set off on her ill-fated voyage so the family was living there at this time. She met Sidney in either 1918 or 1919 - one of the couple was known to be 19. ----------------------------- BUTT - Emma Caroline (known as Annie) Daughter of John BUTT & Annie GREENHAM Born 1854 in Ryde, IOW Married 1877 to James Leonard FRY in Ryde They had four children : Annie Eliza (born 1878), James Henry (born 1883), Harry John (born c. 1885 in Portsea), and Lilian Emma (born 1893). James Leonard Fry died in 1897 in unfortunate circumstances while decorating a shop front in Ryde in preparation for a visit by Queen Victoria in her Diamond Jubilee Year.
